Dancing Without The Mirror

Do you teach in a room with a mirror? Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don’t. Now, I know the mirror is a lovely thing to have, but most of the time I find it distracting, so I don’t like it all that much.

Since my students are so little they get obsessed with seeing themselves in the mirror. They play with their hair and their skirts and really all they want to do is touch it and get really close to it.

Last week, I thought I would try something new by covering it up. I know you can still see through it, but I wanted to try it to see if it would make a difference. I found this big scarf in my closet, so instead of buying something new I just went for it.

Guess what? It worked! At first they were completely mesmerized by it, but then they were much more focused and engaged with me the entire time. It really did make a difference!

I think it’s a great thing to do if you are practicing for a stage dance and want to see how dependent your students are on the mirror or you want to switch things up a little bit for the last few classes of the year! Whatever it is, I thought I would share the idea because it was so successful for me.

Do you teach with a mirror? Do you like it? Do you ever cover it up? I would love to hear!

p.s. Get good duck tape, mine only stayed up for the maximum of 4 classes, then I had to rehang! Another tip: It’s easier if you have a helper to hang it with you!
